About Us...
Our family farm was born from our passion for good food, agriculture & working together as a family. It all started in 1996 when we moved to Arizona from northern British Columbia with two purposes: first, to find a quiet country location to raise our four children, and second, to find a great place to grow an agricultural business that our whole family could be involved in.We started out as a conventional greenhouse growing long-english cucumbers that we sold to distributors across North America. In 2002, we were inspired to begin growing & distributing as much of our produce as possible within Arizona. We went out on a limb & switched from cucumber production to growing tomatoes, micro greens, salads & herbs. We weren't sure how much we'd be able to sell locally when we started, but we're so happy that we can say that we now sell about 95% of our produce locally! From that little step that we've taken many more - here's a few of the highlights along the journey:In 2008, we switched from the traditional heating methods of natural gas & installed a biomass boiler system in which we burn local waste pecan shell. This was the first step in us becoming more sustainable. In 2009, we were able to switch from growing pesticide free as we had been doing, to being certified organic. This was a dream that we had been looking forward to fulfilling for a long time. However, we didn't want to follow the traditional organic growing methods which use animal products (manures, blood, bone & fish meals, etc). Finally, after much research, we developed a vegan organic growing system that is free from the use of animal products & uses strictly plant-based materials for fertilizing. This growing system allows us to re-use our very own waste tomato leaves, ash from our biomass boiler, and to use local waste plant materials. (If you want to know more about how we grow, click here.)We can truly say that we love living in Arizona, and it is home to us. We are proud to share our homegrown produce with our neighbors across Arizona and are thankful to have a superb close-knit extended family of employees who make our family business a successful and fun place to work.

Tomatoes...
From cherries to beefsteaks, from black to white, we grow nearly 25 different varieties of tomatoes. We grow red, yellow & orange cluster tomatoes, red beefsteak tomatoes, red & yellow teardrops & heirloom cherry tomatoes. The tomato varieties that we currently grow have been hand-selected by our family over the years as we have grown literally hundreds of varieties & then chosen our favorites based on the incredible flavor of each tomato rather than on shelf-life or the yield volume. All of our tomatoes are greenhouse-grown & are available year-round.

Our specialty house is the place of variety when it comes to salads & herbs! With over 40 different varieties - everything from brocolli to basil - that we harvest in sizes ranging from micro and up, there's a flavor, a color, and a texture for every occasion. We grow individual varieties of micro greens & herbs, such as arugula & amaranth, as well as Premium & Living Basil, & several standard mixes that include our mixed Micro Greens, Baby & Petite Lettuce, & Petite Power Salad (a mix of greens such as kohlrabi, amaranth, arugula, basil, etc. that are harvested at the petite size). Wood Pellets...
We started the wood pelleting division of our business because of our desire to be using a renewable energy source & our need for a more economical heating source for our greenhouse. Although we make pellets mainly for our own use in heating our greenhouse (you can read more about it here), we do have smaller quantities available for retailers in the Southwest. To receive further information about our pellets or to find out about availability, please contact us.

Heritage Grains Bakery
Heritage Grains Bakery...
Meet Grandma & Grandpa Smith (Marilyn & Charles, parents of Byron) - the developers of Heritage Grains Bakery.Grandpa is part owner of the Farm, & Grandma is an unparalleled gourmet cook & homemaker. Having raised 5 kids on a homestead in Northern British Columbia, they know just how important hearty, healthy, home-baked bread is, & one day they got the idea to start selling Grandma's fabulous all natural, whole sprouted grain breads. There's four things that Grandma uses as her guidelines for making her breads:-All natural whole sprouted grains-No additives or preservatives-Vegan-Have to taste great! What started as a few varieties of sprouted grain breads, has expanded to include buns and also wheat free bread (take note though - it's wheat free & not gluten free because it's made in the same facility as the other breads, so it is possible that small amounts of wheat could get into it).So from Grandpa & Grandma's oven to your table enjoy bread the heritage way it used to be: hearty, tasty, and good for you!

About FarmBox
The Sunizona Family FarmBox is a system that allows us to deliver our fruits and veggies directly to you each week instead of passing through other hands along the way. Sometimes referred to as Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), the FarmBox helps create a deeper connection between us the farmers and you the consumer. While the origins, quality and prices of food fluctuate and more farms are absorbed by fewer hands, our members are making a commitment to their community's food security, environmental sustainability, and to certified organic produce. At Sunizona Family Farms, we consider ourselves more than just small-scale family farmers. We're part of a movement. Our operation is certified organic by CCOF/USDA because it's better for the land and better for your body. Our use of veganic growing practices (animal-product free), a biomass boiler system, and locally sourced fuel and fertilizers make for a remarkably sustainable operation. And now the FarmBox delivery system allows you to get a taste of this movement firsthand. How it worksFarmBoxes are delivered each week to different pick-up locations in both the Tucson and Phoenix areas. After you determine the best pick-up location, you'll need to choose your box preference. While variations are countless, there are two general options. The Standard FarmBox: The contents of this option will be determined by us depending on season and availability. The only initial decisions you make are box size and optional items you can add on from our Web Store. Expect between 8-9 or 10-12 varieties each week in the small or large options respectively. The Custom FarmBox: This option allows you to build a box from scratch using items from our Web Store. The minimum charge is the same as the cost of a small Standard FarmBox ($22). Your Custom FarmBox will then be delivered to your pick-up location each week, but you can also make changes to it as often as you like.Payments are easy. Through our secure server, we accept most debit/credit cards. With the automated weekly payment plan, you'll be able to make changes to your orders whenever you want and we won't have to bug you too much with payment reminders. Payments are always processed on day of delivery.Feel free to browse our Web Store to see what your FarmBox might contain each week. We've also created a Frequently Asked Questions page with some more in-depth answers to some of the more common questions. Many additional questions will be answered upon reading our Farmer-Member Pact. These terms outline our farm policy and must be read thoroughly and accepted as a new member. If you're still undecided and want to talk to somebody here at the farm, by all means we welcome your emails. Go to our Contact Us page for more information. Box Options
Box Options...
While variations are countless, there are two general box options. The Standard FarmBox:The weekly contents of this box option will be determined by us depending on season and availability. The only initial decisions you have to make relate to box size (small or large) and optional add-ons from our Web Store. The Standard Box tends to be a slightly better value than the Custom Box. The following is an example of what might be found in a small Standard FarmBox:* 2 Vine-ripened Orange Tomatoes* 1 basket Cherry Tomatoes* 1 head Romaine Lettuce* 1 bunch Chard* 1 Yellow Watermelon* 1 package Premium Basil* 1 package MicroGreens* 1 Seedless CucumberThe large Standard FarmBox is generally similar to the small but with larger quantities and/or additional items. In order to add items, simply login to your account after signup, access the web store, and submit your desired items for a separate order. These are one-time add-ons, but email us if you prefer to receive these items in your FarmBox every week. The Custom FarmBox:This option allows the member to build a box from scratch using available items from our Web Store. Members can also sign in to their accounts and make changes to their orders each week as they see fit. If we do not receive changes within 2 days before delivery, we simply duplicate the previous week's order. The minimum charge is the same as the cost of a small Standard Share box ($22). It is then delivered to your designated location for pick-up each week.Feel free to browse our Web Store to get a taste of what your FarmBox might contain each week. This is where Custom members build their boxes and where Standard members can choose items to add to their orders. Feel free to email us with any additional questions.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions...
Page 1
What is The Sunizona Family FarmBox?The Sunizona Family FarmBox is an online order and delivery system that allows us to distribute our fruits and veggies directly to the consumer instead of passing through intermediaries along the way. While we also sell our produce to select retail outlets (e.g., Whole Foods, AJs Fine Foods, New Frontiers), the FarmBox is an additional channel that permits a closer relationship between farmer and eater. Such a program is also known as CSA, or Community Supported Agriculture. While we at Sunizona attempt to go beyond the traditional CSA by allowing for such conveniences as customizable boxes and pay-as-you-go options, the values that led to the model's conception continue to inspire us.
Page 2
What are the benefits of certified organic, and what is veganic growing? The benefits related to this agroecological practice and produce are numerous, and it might help to understand it as a culture as well as a farming method: we do not use any synthetic fertilizers or chemical pesticides (personal health), we protect soil fertility, biodiversity and our water systems (the environment), we promote smaller-scale, locally owned agriculture (community), and our fresh, organic produce simply tastes better. Veganic growing takes organic to another level. Not only do we meet all the requirements outlined by the USDA in order to use the organic label, we also believe using only plant-based inputs reduces the risk of contamination and is better for the environment. Chicken manure, for example, contains a high amount of arsenic while other animal-based products risk contaminating your produce with E. coli, antibiotics, growth hormones, heavy metals and other undesirables.
Page 3
Why Sunizona Family Farms?Nowadays there seem to be plenty of CSA options. And that's a good thing! But we at Sunizona Family Farms think we stand out for several reasons: * Certified Organic and Veganic: Not only do we go through the paperwork, money and time to be certified organic by CCOF, we also employ veganic growing practices meaning all our soil media and fertilizers are plant-based. Although the certification process is rigorous on our end, you can rest assured there won't be any synthetic fertilizers, arsenic, blood or chicken poop in your food.* Sustainable: We've introduced the use of a biomass boiler system to heat our greenhouse, which is fueled using locally sourced pecan shells. Our greenhouse technology uses about 1/4 the amount of water required in the field. Old vines and other organic waste material serve as compost making for more of a self-contained ecosystem here than a conventional farm. * Local: We plan to distribute The FarmBox only within Arizona because we believe in supporting the local community, the local economy, and in reducing our carbon footprint. Your partnership with us helps accomplish these goals!* Know Your Farm: Everything you find in your box was grown and harvested right here on our farm. Aside from an occasional surprise from another nearby operation, we make sure you know where your food comes from: Sunizona Family Farms.* Small-scale Family Farming: Here in southern Arizona we've managed to preserve a way of life that is increasingly being crowded out by the big agribusiness hotshots. You're not just supporting Sunizona Family Farms, you're supporting a movement.* Convenience: After evaluating customer concerns, we decided to break from some traditional CSA features. For example, you have the option of building your own weekly box from scratch to avoid unwanted items. Likewise, you can pay on a weekly basis (instead of paying a lump sum up front) and can cancel your service anytime.* The FarmBox: But the most important reason to participate is that you're going to love receiving a box full of delicious, colorful and healthy food each week. Supplement your box with regular shopping habits and...have fun with it!
Page 4
What are The FarmBox options & prices? When signing up for The FarmBox, you can choose between the Standard and the Custom options. The Standard FarmBox: This option comes in small ($22 per week) and large ($30 per week). Each week we will determine what to put inside these boxes depending on season and availability. It represents a portion of our efforts at any given time of the year, while our greenhouse technology and high tunnels help provide more year-round variety. The Custom FarmBox: If you have particular food needs or tastes, you also have the option of customizing your weekly box. As long as you build a box with a minimum value of our small Standard box ($22), we'll get it to your community every week. If we run out of something in our Web Store, we'll notify you to substitute with another item in season. Keep in mind that you can always add items to any order. For example, if you opt for the small Standard FarmBox and need an extra loaf of bread one week, simply log in to your account, access the From the Bakery category in our Web Store, and add your chosen loaf to the order. Your loaf of bread will be sent only once, but email us (farmbox_sunizonafamilyfarms.com) if you prefer to have it added to your box every week.
Page 5
Should I choose the Standard or the Custom FarmBox? Small or Large? These choices ultimately depend on your own needs and preferences. The Standard FarmBox tends to be a better value. Because it allows for more flexibility on our end, it may ultimately have more goods than any given Custom FarmBox. At the same time, while we encourage our members to have an open mind, you may receive items you simply can't seem to force down the hatch. Because we understand that many members have particular eating needs/tastes, we created the customizable option so you can receive a box that has been completely tailored to your household's recipes.Within the Standard Share option, the small box is ideal for a household of 1-2 persons while the large for 3-4. Remember that you can always add items from our Web Store when there are more mouths to feed.
Page 6
When & where are your pick-up locations? Please refer to our pick-up locations section.
Is home Delivery an option
Is home delivery an option?Home delivery is not a regular part of our service. For a number of reasons, we are currently equipped only to deliver boxes for pick up at select partners within the Tucson and Phoenix areas.
Page 7
How do I pay for my FarmBox?We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover & American Express credit and/or debit cards. By submitting your payment information you are agreeing to and will be preapproved for automatic charges to your account for each delivery. The value of that charge will never change unless you add/remove items to your box, or change your subscription altogether. If you do not own a credit/debit card, please contact us to see if there is any way we can accommodate your payment needs.
What other fees do I have to pay
What other fees do I have to pay?None. There are no sign-up fees, no delivery fees, and no additional taxes. Its important that we provide you with a box of high quality fruits and vegetables. At the same time, we're also committed to doing so at a reasonable cost. One of our long-term goals is to make programs like the FarmBox more accessible to households of all incomes, which is why our Web Store prices will likely be the same or less than those found at the supermarket.
Page 8
How long do I have to be a member?Commit to The FarmBox for as long as you feel comfortable - there are no obligations. If you move or decide The FarmBox isn't right for you, give us a call and we can either suspend or cancel your service. And remember that you can always place a temporary vacation hold on your subscription for whatever time period necessary.
Page 9
What if I'm out of town one week?No problem. Your online account allows you to suspend service without being charged using start and end dates. Once that period is up, we will resume billing and delivery of your box. If you need to suspend your service indefinitely, give us a call.
Page 10
How fresh is The FarmBox?Our fruits & veggies are picked and packed either same day or within 1-2 days before delivery. Remember that most retail items have been picked immaturely and ripened on the long road to the supermarket - sometimes up to 2 weeks - which causes depreciation of flavor and nutrition.
Page 11
What does eating with the seasons entail? At Sunizona Family Farms we grow many of our items in controlled environments like the greenhouse allowing for a wide variety of fruits and veggies all year long. Nevertheless, we're still compelled to obey the whims of the weather. Eating food grown according to the location of the sun will hopefully become something you can appreciate as a supporter of local agriculture. This may also mean receiving repeated items in the Standard FarmBox option. But we encourage you to be an inductive cook; instead of starting with strict recipes then ingredients, start with the ingredients from your box each week and adapt recipes or invent your own. Watch for recipes incorporating seasonal items in your FarmBox and on our Facebook page.
Page 12
Can I visit the farm?By all means, yes. We'd love to meet you! We've done children's educational programs in the past and plan on hosting a harvest festival in the future, but until then you're welcome to stop by. Just make sure you contact us in advance and keep in mind it takes a few dirt roads before arriving to our farm outside of Willcox, AZ.
Page 13
How do I sign up for The FarmBox?It's easy. Just go to our Signup Page and answer some questions regarding pick up and payment options. Use our to help guide you along. We have also created a separate instructions page to help guide you through the process. Remember that Farmigo, the independent website that hosts our online ordering system, has their own Help site regarding management of your online account. And, as always, never hesitate to contact us directly with any additional questions or suggestions.

Veganic Growing
Veganic Growing...
Veganic. Think of it as Vegan-Organic, meaning certified organic growing that is free from the use of animal products (manures, blood, bone or fish meals, etc.) and uses strictly plant-based materials. This type of growing decreases the potential risk of contamination from animal-related diseases & doesn't introduce the hormones & other things fed animals that could have negative impacts to the environment & our health. Our journey to veganic growing has been a long one. We had always dreamed of the day we could be certified organic. However, because we didn't want to follow the tradtitional animal-based organic growing methods, it took years of researching just what combinations of plant materials would achieve the proper balance of nutrients in the soil. The system that we have developed involves growing plants in a more natural manner than most traditional greenhouse organic methods and uses plant fertilizers that we have created using local waste plant materials. We use our own plant waste products along with other local waste plant materials, & ash from our Bio-mass boiler.

Local
Local...
When we started switching from being traditional greenhouse growers in which we sold all of our products to distributors across North America, we had no idea just how much of our product we would be able to sell locally or whether or not the idea would even work.It didn't take long though for it to catch on, & for the past several years, we've been selling nearly 98% of our products locally within Arizona. We've been excited about how this has been able to make us a more sustainable company & to decrease the distance that our produce has to travel to our customer's tables.Recently, though, we've been able to take local to the next level. In our non-veganic growing system, we grew our tomatoes in slabs that came from Sri-Lanka and fertilizers that came mainly from Israel & Norway. In our veganic growing system, we grow in dirt in raised beds (now how much more local & natural can you be than that?!). For fertilizers, most of what we use comes from local sources - tomato leaves from our own plants as well as straw, alfalfa & pinto beans that we get from other local farms. And for the plant products that we can't get locally here, we are able to get them from farms located within the US.Besides the local products that we use for growing, we also get the pecan shells that we use for heating our greenhouse from a local farm here in Arizona (read about it under the Biomass Heating section), and the waste ash from burning them gets re-used in our fertilizers for our crops. To us, local is part of connecting the farm and the table - of growing nutrient rich foods in an environmentally conscious & healthy way; it's giving our customers the essence of local: locally grown using mainly local materials.

Biomass Heating
Biomass Heating...
In order to reduce our use of fossil fuels, we recently installed a biomass boiler system. This boiler burns wood pellets that we make from locally grown waste pecan shells. Not only is it better for the environment because we are no longer relying solely on fossil fuels for heating our greenhouse, but we are also using a local waste product that in the burning process doesn't release any more carbon dioxide into the environment than if it were to decompose naturally, and the left over ash that comes from the burning process is re-used in our Veganic growing system to fertilize our plants.

Farmer-Member Pact
The Farmer-Member Pact...
Eating is an agricultural act. - Wendell BerryFirst of all, thanks. We appreciate your commitment to certified organic and veganic practices, Arizona's local economy, sustainability, and to us. We provide this service in order to get our fresh fruits and veggies directly to you instead of passing through middlemen along the way. It just makes sense and works out for both of us in the long run. While we're going to do our best to deliver topnotch boxes, you should understand that guarantees are hard to make in the farming business. That's why you're here to help and why we ask that you understand and agree to the following terms.* If you are ever unsatisfied with the box you receive, we'll either refund the amount or make it up to you in the next FarmBox delivered. Contact us and let's talk about it. * We strive to provide as much botanical diversity in your box each week as possible but cannot assure that all our crops will flourish. Please expect to see items repeated in the Standard FarmBox option (or consider the Custom FarmBox).* We cannot guarantee indefinite availability of Web Store items. We will notify you when items run out so you can substitute for something else in season.* We use an independent, web-based service called Farmigo to handle member accounts and online ordering. Members are responsible for the information and changes to their orders and account.* Any changes to orders (e.g., add-ons, cancellations) must be made at least 2 days before pick-up so we can make sure we have our pick lists, harvesting, and kitchen ready to go for you. Custom FarmBox orders will always be duplicated from week to week if no changes are made.* We offer the automated weekly payment option to allow for easy changes and add-ons, and to make billing easier for both of us. At the same time, we are not responsible for overdraft fees or the like - please try to plan for the weekly withdrawals.* We guarantee that any personal information will not be sold to a third party. Your payment information will be processed using Authorize.net, a secure payment gateway provider.* If you are going on vacation, you can temporarily suspend your service online (at least 2 days in advance). Otherwise, unless you designate a friend to do the pick up, your box will be donated and you will still be charged.* You are free to change, suspend, or cancel your membership at anytime. Of course, we'd like to hear about it so please give us a call.* Make sure to abide by the right pick up locations and times. Search for, handle, and take only the box with your name on it. If there are any problems, please let us know - not the pick up location.* We are not responsible for perished goods resulting from a delayed pick up. Also keep in mind that our stuff might look a bit different than the grocery store's; we don't like it uniform, waxy and "perfect" - hopefully you'll join us soon enough.* Remember that fruits and veggies grow in soil and share that space with other living organisms - especially when toxic pesticides aren't used. If you find a bug or a bit of dirt in your box, that's just to remind you where this good stuff comes from. * Help us stay green in other ways by reusing our packaging materials. Simply save, break down, and return the boxes to the same locations during your next pick up.* Stay informed. It's the member's responsibility to review their online account information, order status, emails, and newsletters. And always feel free to contact us for anything at all.Despite the formality of this pact, what we really want is for you to feel more connected to your food, more comfortable with your consumer choices, and closer to your farmer. Just so long as you understand that farming can be a gamble at times and hiccups do occur, we're going to do our best to make this as smooth a partnership as possible. We sure appreciate your investment in us. Now let's eat.
